Huatulco, or Bahias de Huatulco, as the whole area is more properly known, is the perfect destination for those who love the beach and enjoy a tranquil, more environmentally-friendly setting for their tropical vacation. The development of Huatulco is comparatively recent and is controlled by the state department of tourism. This close control won Huatulco the prestigious Green Globe certification in 2005 for sustainable development, making Huatulco the only place in Mexico to have received the award. Tangolunda Bay is where you’ll find the large luxury hotels and attractive golf course, Santa Cruz Bay is for smaller hotels, is more frequented by locals, and is where the cruise ships dock, while La Crucecita Huatulco is off the beach and is where you’ll find more bars, restaurants, and shops. Huatulco is a great place for snorkeling, scuba diving, boat trips, and fishing trips. Approximately thirty minutes down the coast you can find excellent surfing at Barra de la Cruz. Not far inland there are coffee plantations, waterfalls, and rivers for rafting. Huatulco is a small, intimate vacation destination surrounded by nature.
