Mazatlan is a port city with great beaches and great prices. Less developed and more down to earth, Mazatlan has the Pacific beaches, the fabulous seafood, the nightlife, and the luxury resorts, but not the higher prices of the better known resorts such as Cancun. Come visit the ‘shrimp capital of the world’ for your Pacific Mexican getaway – you won’t be disappointed. Although Mazatlan has never attracted large numbers of American or Canadian visitors, it has a long history as a popular weekend and vacation destination for Mexican tourists. However, things are changing; there are more flights to Mazatlan from the U.S. these days and the Zona Dorada area to the north of town has become home to an ever-increasing number of all-inclusive vacation resorts. The old quarter boasts a beautiful cathedral and attractive pedestrian squares where you can sit at charming sidewalk cafes and enjoy a meal or refreshments in a shaded plaza. For over a century the Carnival in Mazatlan has been one of the best known in the world. In the week before Lent Mazatlan hosts a massive street party, of which one of the more curious aspects is the ‘Day of the Oppressed Husband’ when the men finally get to do what they want, which apparently usually involves something to do with fireworks or confetti-filled eggs. Despite its recent growth Mazatlan remains one of the best-value destinations in Mexico, and if you can make it here during Mexican national holidays, at Easter, or during school vacations then you’ll get even better value for your Mexican Pacific beach vacation.
